"In 1998, Kim McDowell organized the first Toy Box One Mile Run. Same as this year, unwrapped toys were collected for the Toy Box (sponsored by the Cape Jaycees). Kim wanted to make sure every child had a toy at Christmas. At the finish line for the runners, she gave everyone a Christmas ornament as they crossed the finish line. In 2010 Kim McDowell lost her battle with cancer. We miss her and her love for children, so we dedicate this race in her memory. (And to make sure every child has a toy at Christmas.)"

An unseasonably warm late November evening and newly renovated Broadway Corridor highlight the 2012 Toy Box Mile. At dusk, ninety-two runners and walkers are on the starting line next to the entrance to Capaha Park. Taking off ahead of The Parade of Lights, the group races one mile straight down a sparkling Broadway lined with hundreds of cheering parade-goers to the banks of the Mississippi River. In addition to the actual race, a costume contest is held with this year's winners (Ross Tilghman, Kaitlyn Bohnsack, Rhonda Windeknecht, and John Atkinson) receiving prizes from Missouri Running Company. A unique running experience for a good cause, and one recommended to all area runners and walkers...and where else would you ever witness a lighted Christmas Box run a sub-5:00 minute mile?
