Midsouth Championship Marathon / Half Marathon

Wynne, AR -- November 2, 2013 (Results @ Stearns Race Timing: Marathon: http://www.stearnsracetiming.com/Results/2013/11-2%20wynne/full%20overall.txt
Half Marathon: http://www.stearnsracetiming.com/Results/2013/11-2%20wynne/half%20overall.txt

Several members of the Cape Girardeau running community ventured down to Wynne, Arkansas for the 15th annual Mid South Championships Marathon/Half Marathon.  I had heard from several people that this was a good race which, in addition to being certified, also had great course support and post-race amenities.  The price of this HM and full marathon are also a fraction of the price of most of the larger events in the Midwest which is also a big plus.

We were greeted by a nice 49 degree 8:00 a.m starting time temperature with a light wind.  Approximately 450 people toed the line for the two races which were ran simultaneously.  This is an interesting race due to the fact that everyone starts together as well as it being an out-and-back course for both distances.  At the respective turn-around points each competitor can see exactly how the race is shaking out both in front and behind of them.

The leader went out at 6:10 for the first mile then settled back into a more comfortable pace as he was running the full marathon.  Hammes and Brandon Shemonia were hanging back several seconds behind the leader until the mile mark then Shemonia, who was making his HM debut, decided to start pushing the pace a little more.  He was running his first 13.1 mile on feel as his garmin had decided not to work.  This would make his race a little more interesting.

Shemonia hit the 6.5 mile turnaround in a little over 36 minutes and chatted with the "old man" on his way back.  Hammes hit the turnaround point several minutes later and, when turning around, saw a familiar face about 25 seconds behind him.  Leah Torvillson, Arkansas native and multiple time Olympic qualifier at the marathon distance was rolling toward the HM turnaround point.  I looked back after running for 25 seconds to see if Torvillson was going to keep running past the HM turnaround or if she would be blowing by me in the near future.  She continued on and ended up being the overall marathon winner with a time of 2:43:xx and looked like she was out for an easy jog as she finished her last 200m in the high school stadium.  She is an incredible distance runner.

Brandon Shemonia ended up leading the HM group to the finish line despite taking a slight detour toward the end of the route and running an extra 3 blocks.  Brandon's 1:15:32 finish time was impressive based on his current training and he is already looking forward to the day when he can again compete at the HM distance.

Andy Johnson and Chellie Jannin, two of SE Missouri's elite marathoners, both finished strong races in windy conditions and took home 2nd place OA plaques.  It was a good day for many of the SE Missouri runners and this is a quality race which is very well run with fantastic course support.  It also features one of the best post-race meals I have ever been treated to.  Kudos to all those who made this race an enjoyable experience.

Run for the Wall 5K

Jackson, MO -- October 12, 2013 (Results @ Cape Road Runners: http://www.caperoadrunners.org/results.htm )

Vet Motorcycle Escort prepares to lead the field of 35 from the starting line.

Front runners take charge early: L to R -- Paul Schell (3rd OA), Jay Townsend (2nd OA),
and Overall Winner Kevin Hammes.

The Run for the Wall 5K was added as a Grand Prix race this year.  A small but enthusiastic group ventured to the starting point of the race and were led across hwy 61 and into the city park.  The veterans on their motorcycles peeled off just past the one mile mark of the race and left the runners to negotiate the rest of the race solo.  As we moved up Washington Street and weaved our way toward Greeensferry Road, each runner had to traverse several challenging inclines.  Once the competitors moved onto Francis Drive near the 2.5 mile mark, most of the "hard" work was completed and much of the finish was a downhill treat.  The finishing clock was located just inside the entrance of Brookside Park and each runner was able to track their time for the final .10 miles of the race.  Good race for a very worthy cause.

33rd Annual City of Roses Half Marathon / 5K

Cape Girardeau, MO --  September 15, 2013 (Results @ Cape Road Runners:  http://www.caperoadrunners.org/results.htm )

The 33rd running of the City of Roses Half Marathon/5K races were contested on Sunday, September 15, 2013.  The weather gods must have decided to give the competitors a break following their 2012 water-logged races as the day dawned with a crisp morning temperature of 51 degees with a negligible wind.  The author has competed in many COR half marathons/5Ks and the 2013 edition was as good as he can ever remember.

The half marathon race took on a different flavor this year.  The usual 30-under speedsters were not in attendance thus providing an opportunity for the veterans of the road races as well as some of the newer distance runners in the area to shine.

Overall winners of the 2013 City of Roses Half Marathon were Kevin Hammes and Liz Beck with finishing times of 1:21:05 and 1:35:30, respectively.

Overall Winner: Kevin Hammes.
Female Overall Winner: Liz Beck with the Southern Illinois ageless wonder Gary Holda.

The top 5 men finishers all came in under the 90 min mark and included several of the local up-and-comers in the distance events including Andy Johnson, Daniel Kear and Ross McFerren.  These guys are training hard and I look for each to continue posting impressive times in the half marathon/marathon distances in the future.

Second Overall: Andy Johnson.

Third Overall: Caleb Zustiak.

Fourth Overall: Daniel Kear.

Fifth Overall: Ross McFerron.

The top 5 women were an eclectic bunch with placers in their teens as well as the Master's categories.  All of the top 5 women completed the course in 1:43:09 or better.

Second OA Female: Jennifer Perkins.

Third OA Female: Jenna Griffith.

Fourth OA Female: Zhao Ni Dirnberger.

Fifth OA Female: Chelli Jannin.

Master's Winners:  Mark Bochantin and Carol Winter were the Master's Champions with finishing times of 1:30:23 and 1:47:17.

Masters Winners: Carol Winter and Mark Bochantin.

Two elite wheelchair racers also raced the half marathon course.  Local favorite Zach Young lined up against Memphis, Tennessee's John Payne and they both impressed the crowd and runners with their tenacity during the hilly middle portion of the course.  Zach crossed the finish line in 1:13:27.  John followed shortly in 1:16:38.

Zach Young conquers the hill at Veterans Parkway.

The 5K route remained the same as in 2012 with an out-and-back trip up the Osage Trail north with the turn around point in the Walden Park subdivision.  The half-marathon route had been changed and now took the runners for an extended tour of the county roads north and west of Cape Girardeau.  The starting and finishing points for both races were the Osage Center parking areas as the Cape Road Runners had their Jaguar timing system set up on the west side of the Osage Center.

The 5K winners were Paul Fliege and Lisa Georger who completed the course in times of 18:27 and 21:44 respectively.  Both competitors are "known entities" in the running community and Paul was using this race as a tune-up for his upcoming marathon race in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in early October.
