CGPS Foundation Run for Excellence 10K / 5K

Cape Girardeau, MO -- April 6. 2013 (Results @ Cape Road Runners: http://www.caperoadrunners.org/Results/2013/Run%20for%20Excellence.pdf )

The 2013 version of the CGPS 10K race gets another course makeover, courtesy of the Cape PD.  The new route is a two loop course along several of the major by-ways in south Cape Girardeau.   This race also has a unique start and finish which allows both the 5k and 10k participants the opportunity to start and end their respective races on the track of Cape Central's Stadium.

The groups both start and the field merges at the back of the stadium and moves onto Mount Auburn road.  Mark Hahn takes control of the race quickly and sets the pace for the rest of the runners.  He serves as the rabbit for the entire pack of runners as they traverse the first loop.  GrandMaster Kevin Bramlett settles into his race pace and begins to click off the miles.  Kevin Hammes begins conservatively through the first two miles then begins to pick up the pace as he moves toward the end of the first loop on his way to the 10k title.  Paul Schell and Ron Rosati, both local marathon extrarodinares, run strong races and set PR's.  Birthday girl Chellie Jannin celebrates her entrance into the Master's category by smoking the course in 42:50.  Marcy Ambler and Lora Coots also run sub-50 minute races to finish 2nd an 3rd overall,  respectively.

The CGPS Foundation Run 5K course also gets a new look for 2013.  Runners will start and finish on the Cape Central High School track with a loop out to Kingshighway and the Southern Expressway.  The new route features a couple of challenging climbs in miles one and two and multple "S" curves throughout.  The racer's tactics will be front and center as the course will require focus on maintaining a prudent effort early and running smart tangents start to finish to save valuable steps.  A maximum of 100 Grand Prix points are available to age-group winners as the event has been added to this year's series.

The Jackson Invitational Track Meet gets underway later this same morning, and Cape Central Coach Mark Hahn has a bus to catch.  Coach Hahn runs his race in this very manner...like he has a bus to catch.  Crossing the finish line in 17:32, he is almost a minute ahead of his closest challenger in the field of twenty-seven.  Sarah Jones wins the female overall with her clock time of 27:22.

Kevin Bramlett (18:24) and Bruce Jones (25:04) round out the top three overall.  Amy Sutherlin (27:23) and Ashley Jones (27:43) take second and third overall in the female division.
