Vet Motorcycle Escort prepares to lead the field of 35 from the starting line. |
Front runners take charge early: L to R -- Paul Schell (3rd OA), Jay Townsend (2nd OA), and Overall Winner Kevin Hammes. |
The Run for the Wall 5K was added as a Grand Prix race this year. A small but enthusiastic group ventured to the starting point of the race and were led across hwy 61 and into the city park. The veterans on their motorcycles peeled off just past the one mile mark of the race and left the runners to negotiate the rest of the race solo. As we moved up Washington Street and weaved our way toward Greeensferry Road, each runner had to traverse several challenging inclines. Once the competitors moved onto Francis Drive near the 2.5 mile mark, most of the "hard" work was completed and much of the finish was a downhill treat. The finishing clock was located just inside the entrance of Brookside Park and each runner was able to track their time for the final .10 miles of the race. Good race for a very worthy cause.
