February 25th, 2012 continued as another fabulous winter day in SE Missouri and Chaffee High School was the rally point for the 6th Annual Race For the Cure 5K run/walk. These folks always put on a great event and the 2012 edition was no exception.
The weather at 9:00 a.m was a breezy 38 degrees with bright sunshine and a wind blowing 14-15 mph from the NNW direction. The large crowd of racers toed the line and received final instructions from Coach Calkins prior to the race start by Coach Clair. The high schoolers and a few other brave runners darted out fast in an attempt to gain early position in the race. By the time the runners had reached Main Street and begun the 1.25 mile trek north they were working against a tricky crosswind from the NNW direction. As the leaders turned west onto Dame Street for a .50 mile section they were running directly into the wind and the wind definitely took it's toll on the competitors. There was a lot of jockeying for position as the runners finished the last portion of the race.
The last .25 mile of the race was a sprint to the finish down 5th Street back to the Chaffee High School and under the Cape Roadrunners finish line and race clock.

This race raised in excess of $1500 dollars for breast cancer awareness as well as several other significant donations to families which have been affected by this disease. The Chaffee races is one of my personal favorite races and always a great time. This year's official registration of 322 participants set a record for the race; I know Travis Calkins will be looking for 400+ next year so bring some friends along for a great race and a good time.
